Keys To Hearing God

By Mark Virkler

As a Bible-believing, born-again Christian, I struggled unsuccessfully for 12 years to hear God's voice. I prayed, fasted, studied my Bible and listened, all to no avail. Then, in 1979, God set me aside for a year to study, read, and experiment with learning to hear His voice.

During that time He taught me four keys that opened the door to two-way prayer. I've discovered that not only do they work for me, but they have worked for thousands who have learned to use them. They help us learn the art of two-way dialogue with God and tremendous intimacy that transforms our lives. These four keys are found in Habakkuk 2:1,2: "I will stand upon my post of observation and station myself on the tower and will watch to see what He will say within me and what answer I will make to the perplexities of my complaint against Him. And the Lord answered me and said, 'Write the vision and engrave it so plainly upon the tablets that everyone who passes may read it as he hastens by.'"

  • Key #1
God's voice in our hearts sounds like a flow of spontaneous thoughts. Therefore, when I tune to God, I tune to spontaneity.
  • Key #2
I must learn to still my own thoughts and emotions, so I can sense God's flow of thoughts and emotions within me.
  • Key #3
As I pray and fix the eyes of my heart on Jesus, I will see in the spirit dreams and visions of Almighty God.
  • Key #4
Journaling: recording our prayers and God's answers.
